Campus Antifascist Network - UMich
The Campus Antifascist Network (CAN) is a national collection of scholars, students, organizers, and other community members who are united in the goal of resisting fascist mobilizations in our places of learning and living. The CAN chapter at the University of Michigan is among the first local chapters to be founded in the country. We have formed, out of necessity, in response to the terrible surge in fascist, neo-fascist, and white supremacist aggression against our communities since the 2016 election, but we by no means ignore the deep roots these dangerous forces have in our country's history. Our aim is to provide a robust network of solidarity and defense in the interest of protecting our students, families, friends, colleagues, and neighbors, and to oppose the hateful, destructive groups that are mobilizing to destroy our communities. We are also an educational community service organization. Throughout the year, we will be organizing big and small events (teach-ins, book discussions, panels) for specialists and organizers to share their knowledge and to answer questions our community has about fascism, white supremacy, and resistance to them.
We are a diverse group that celebrates love, equality, and acceptance. But we have witnessed firsthand, and are firm in our conviction, that dangerous and intolerant groups who threaten the safety of our communities are allowed to continue their campaigns of violence and intolerance by exploiting the principles of "tolerance" and "free speech." Thus, we say definitively: intolerance will not be tolerated here. Fascist aggression will not be tolerated.
