Student/ Farmworker Alliance
The Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA) is a national network of students and youth organizing with farmworkers to eliminate sweatshop conditions and modern-day slavery in the fields. We work in partnership with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), a Florida-based, membership-led organization of mostly Latino, Haitian and Mayan Indian low-wage workers. We understand our work as part of larger movements for economic and social justice.
A driving force in the CIW's national Campaign for Fair Food — which calls on major purchasers of tomatoes to leverage their tremendous buying power for the betterment of farmworker wages and working conditions — the young people of SFA have played an indispensable role in bringing about each of the eight groundbreaking "Fair Food" accords that the CIW has won since 2005. Among these are agreements with Taco Bell, McDonald's, Burger King, Whole Foods, Subway, Bon Appétit Management Co., Compass Group, Aramark, Sodexo, Chipotle Mexican Grill, and Trader Joe's.
As the “target market” of the fast food industry and as students strategically poised to hold our educational institutions accountable, young people have played an indispensable role in bringing about each of the groundbreaking “Fair Food” agreements.
Through tireless organizing grounded in a program of education, action, and leadership development, we were a driving force behind nine of the largest victories against corporate greed that our generation has seen, and we're just getting started. Now we shift our gaze to the supermarket industry (companies like Ahold USA, parent company of Stop & Shop and Giant, Kroger, and Publix) as we continue — alongside farmworkers — to create the path to a better world.
